Most clients don’t mind paying for something
they mind not knowing what they’re paying for.
This story started with a simple, reasonable question.
The question
The client had been paying £6,000 per year for hosting.
No drama.
No accusations.
Just curiosity.
They asked their agency:
“Can you explain what our hosting actually includes?”
That’s it.
The response
Instead of a clear explanation, the agency sent back:
- a dense technical document
- filled with acronyms and jargon
- no summary
- no translation
- no context
The message was subtle, but loud:
“This is too technical for you.”
And it worked — temporarily.
What didn’t add up
When the client eventually came to us, they felt embarrassed for not understanding the document.
That’s the real damage here.
Because when we reviewed the setup, we quickly spotted:
- services duplicated across tools
- unnecessary layers of infrastructure
- separate Cloudflare charges buried into the cost
- features that simply weren’t required for the site
None of this had been clearly explained.
None of it had been justified.
Why agencies do this
Confusion is protective.
If a client doesn’t understand:
- they don’t question
- they don’t challenge
- they don’t leave
Long documents packed with technical language are often used to:
- overwhelm
- shut down conversation
- avoid transparency
Most clients don’t want to feel stupid — so they stop asking.
What we did instead
Our approach was the opposite.
We:
- broke the entire setup down in plain English
- explained what each tool actually did
- highlighted what was optional vs required
- identified what could be removed immediately
No documents designed to intimidate.
Just a conversation designed to inform.
The outcome
Once the unnecessary services were stripped out and the setup simplified, the difference was clear.
✅ Fewer moving parts
✅ Lower monthly costs
✅ A setup the client actually understood
📊 The wow stat
£3,000+ saved annually by removing hidden and unnecessary services — without sacrificing performance or security.
The real lesson
If your agency can’t explain your setup simply, one of two things is happening:
- They don’t fully understand it themselves
- They don’t want you to understand it
Neither is acceptable when it’s your money.
Transparency isn’t a “nice to have”.
It’s the bare minimum.
If this sounds familiar…
You’re probably not “bad with tech”.
You’re probably being kept in the dark.
